Great Scott!

The final round of the Volvo World Cup qualifiers at Horseworld in Sydney's northwest recently proved a winner for WA's Sharon Scott and her impressive young horse "Jox".

Sharon and Jox won the Table C competition with a clear round, then finished sixth in the Table AM3 round.

Interestingly, Sharon has been at the centre of debate on stopping quality horses here going abroad.

Despite a considerable offer for Jox from the Middle East, Sharon says there's no chance of parting with the horse.

An eight-year-old promising ex-racehorse, Jox is the first horse targeted by the EFA's Horse Retention Scheme designed to keep good horses in Australia.

This is a great relief to showjumping enthusiasts who hope to see Sharon Scott Sharon and Jox competing at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

For now, Sharon is content running fourth in the Australian League Standings, maintaining Jox is "too young to compete at the World Cup this year." She instead is aiming for next year's World Championships in Dublin.

Their list of successes includes the Grand Prix event at Bega, the inaugural Hermes Grand Prix in Sydney and the World Cup qualifier at Dapto.

Sharon is currently unsponsored, and typically is subdued by the much greater prizemoney on offer in Europe and the US.

She competes and trains in a Pessoa Flat Saddle and buys her custom- made bridles from Charlton Saddlery.

Rugs and saddle cloths are bought exclusively from Skye Park Rugs, while she only uses handmade pure cotton leg wraps on Jox because they are thicker than other bandages on the market.

Jox wears only Italian-made Pirelli Boots.

Sharon worms Jox with Equimec products, and keeps his grey coat gleaming with Champion Tails shampoo for white horses which "takes the yellow tinge out of his coat." Sharon looks pristine in the arena, wearing Peter Williams breeches, a Julie Jones taylor-made jacket, and Hannoverian custom-made boots and helmet. In just their fourth year of competition, Sharon and Jox have a great future. Jox is a big scopey horse with elastic-type hind quarters that provide plenty of clearance over the jumps.

Being a mother as well, Sharon has proved that you can have the best of both worlds, but when pressed on how she does it, she says patience is one of the keys.
